What Color Eggs Do Easter Eggers Lay
Easter Egger Chickens
DESCRIPTION
As you might suspect, Easter Egger chickens get their name from the colorful eggs they lay. These chickens descend from multiple chicken breeds and, as a result, come in a wide variety of feather colors and patterns. An excellent chicken for beginners, the Easter Egger variety is one of the most popular in the U.S. because of their colored eggs and low maintenance requirements.
Weight
They are smaller sized for a standard chicken with roosters weighing around 5 lbs. and hens weighing around 4-4.5 lbs.
Good for
Easter Eggers are good layers. They tolerate all types of climates, making them versatile for any region.
Temperament
Easter Eggers are calm, docile, and friendly, and they are good around children and people in general. For that reason, they are a great choice for a flock.
Egg Production
This line of Easter Eggers is imported from the Czech Republic. We imported this breed because of their prolific laying abilities and egg size. This breed will lay approximately 280 eggs per year. Easter Eggers are good layers, with egg sizes from large to extra-large.
Time to Maturity
Easter Egger chicks will begin laying around 20 weeks of age. Lay dates will vary on lighting and nutrition.
Breed FAQs
What are Easter Egger chickens?
Easter Egger chickens are simply a variety of chicken, but not a breed of chicken. They do not conform to any breed standard defined by the American Poultry Association.
What color eggs do Easter Eggers lay?
Oocyanin, a pigment, is deposited on the surface of their shells and accounts for the blue-green egg color. Although 90 percent of eggs will be blue or green, the rest will be cream to light brown.
What is the difference between an Ameraucana and an Easter Egger?
Although people often mistake Ameraucana chickens for Easter Egger chickens, the reality is that they are distinctly different breeds. Ameraucanas ( or Araucanas) are a purebred chicken with the same characteristics across the entire breedsuch as laying only blue eggs or feather colors. Easter Egger chickens are a hybrid breed that can lay blue eggs, but, unlike Ameraucanas, can also lay green, brown, or light pink eggs. A chicken will only lay one color egg and not multiple colors.
